The end of an era is certainly upon us. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Phoebe Philo’s spring/summer 2018 runway collection for Céline, the LVMH-owned French house that she single-handedly built into one of contemporary fashion’s most coveted brands, turned out to be the powerhouse designer’s final bow. After nearly ten years at the helm and countless iconic collections later, it was time for the British designer to bid adieu to her role as creative director. In true Philo style, she presented a finale collection of restrained greatness, tapping into the codes of the house that she has worked feverishly on developing over the years; oversized tailoring, statement separates, layering, texture, retro patterns and pops of unexpected color. With Céline’s future creative director Hedi Slimane waiting in the wings, one can only hope he doesn’t entirely abolish the brand's understated elegance that has come to define Philo’s Céline woman.
