Martin Margiela Auction
Fans of the beloved Belgian couturier Martin Margiela won’t want to miss Sotheby’s fall fashion auction, which will be shown during Paris Fashion Week and auctioned online from September 19 to October 1. The 220 pieces to be auctioned off come from a personal archive dedicated to Margiela, with clothing and accessories spanning over 20 years of the designer’s career.
The auction has no shortage of Margiela’s famous surreal style, including a men’s vest of playing cards amongst other pieces from Maison Margiela’s Artisanal collection. Also included are leather pieces from the designer's Autumn/Winter 1992 Salvation Army collection, linen jackets from the Spring/Summer 1997 Stockholm collection, and perfect-for-fall down coats from Autumn/Winter 1999.
Margiela famously ushered in a new era of contemporary fashion, pushing boundaries with his avant-garde constructions that played with shape, size, asymmetry, and the designer’s own famous anonymity. The auction includes pieces from the designer’s emergence in 1989 up to 2006, allowing fans to graze eras of famous collections by the king of the Antwerp Six, Martin Margiela.
