Devotion! 30 Years of Photographing Women

December 14, 2019 - March 29, 2020

Fotografiska - 281 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010

After establishing its roots in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2010, Fotografiska has become one of the wrold’s largest and most renowned destinations for photography. Exhibiting well-known and emerging photographers alike, the museum has hosted over 200 shows to date featuring names such as Annie Liebowitz, David LaChapelle, and Albert Watson. Following the success of Fotografiska in its native city of Stockholm, the organization has expanded its mission into growing an internationally recognized foundation, opening up two more locations in Tallinn, Estonia, and most recently, New York City, in a space spanning three massive floors of a renovated church building on 22nd street and Park Avenue South. The New York branch’s innuagral show, ‘Devotion! 30 Years of Photography!’, is an exhibition celebrating Ellen von Unwerth’s 30 years of photographing women, while exploring photography as both a playful and provocative medium through seven expressions: Drama, Gender, Love, Lust, Passion, Power, and Play.

Born in Germany in 1954, von Unwerth was first celebrated for her attention-grabbing and seductive advertising images for Guess Jeans in the 1990s. The success of these campaigns led to a slew of other work for major brands such as Absolut Vodka, A.P.C, Chanel, Dior, Jimmy Choo, L'oReal, Mercedes Benz, Veuve Clicquot and many more. Meanwhile, von Unwerth’s first of many books, ‘Snaps’, was published in 1994 just as her work started being collected and internationally exhbited.

Devotion! stirs up emotions and creates commotion through its playful tonality and explores stereotypes of women throughout history in a non-objective manner. On view through March 2020, Ellen von Unwerth’s latest exhibition at Fotografsika NYC is a must see for art, fashion and photogrphay lovers!
