It is about time fashion’s favorite, larger-than-life personality got his turn in the spotlight. In the newly released film, ‘The Gospel According to André’, director Kate Novack chronicles the vivacious life of former Vogue editor André Leon Talley. From his humble beginnings in North Carolina and his early days in New York City answering phones for Andy Warhol, to assisting Diana Vreeland at The Costume Institute, vacationing with Karl Lagerfeld, and a long-lasting career at American Vogue, André Leon Talley was arguably fashion’s first major African-American tastemaker, beloved and respected by the industry. With an unrivaled knowledge of fashion, history, French literature and culture, despite encountering early prejudices, Talley rose to become of the most respected and loved forces in the industry. Novack’s film is brought to life through Talley’s spirited personality and equally vibrant interviews with friends, family and fashion world contemporaries, all of whom praise his brilliant, transcendental influence. A must see documentary for fashion lovers; long live the infallible King of haute couture!
