Fashion Monopoly by Minnie Muse is a subversive reimagining of Hasbro’s 84-year-old property game. Monopoly encapsulates everything that we love and admire – spectacular branding, a strong visual and emotional identity, rules, industry, competition, nostalgia and intrigue. A cult classic with a twist, this disruptive work appropriates Monopoly’s iconic design, while catapulting everyone’s favorite childhood pastime into a new genre and era.

Utilizing the board game’s uniform layout and idiosyncratic structure, Minnie Muse has thoughtfully reconsidered the potential of these subjective characteristics in the context of contemporary fashion and 21st century culture.

Properties, for example, are now brands – organized, similarly, in order of ascending value and importance, beginning with H&M and ending with Chanel – while each accompanying brand’s card denotes values based on number of stores and flagships associated with each, as opposed to houses and hotels. Classic Monopoly landing spaces, such as Chance and Community Chest, have been swapped out with Sample Sale – an unpredictable event offering as much possibility of good fortune as it does disappointment – and Concept Stores, respectively.

The game’s ten traditional metal playing tokens – historically including a top hat, horse and rider, race car, battleship, iron and thimble – have been replaced with ten iconic accessories, such as Alexander McQueen’s Armadillo boot, Prada’s Flame heel, a Margiela Tabi boot, an Hermès Birkin bag, a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk and Chanel’s 2.55 quilted handbag.

But wait, there’s more. Minnie Muse Monopoly expands outside the realm of fashion to include references to contemporary culture and technology. Monopoly’s famed Railroads have been replaced with transportation apps – Curb, JUNO, Lyft and Uber - while and the electric company appears, instead, as Apple. Likewise, allusions to 21st century pop culture are vast – denoted by Diet Prada in place of the board’s dreaded policeman, and the ring in the ‘Luxury Tax’ landing space is modeled after Kim Kardashian’s engagement ring, naturally.

Fashion Monopoly by Minnie Muse is a cheeky, camp, humorous and hopelessly modern reinterpretation of the world’s most popular board game. Who wants to play?!
