Resort 2019
Nicolas Ghesquière’s annual Louis Vuitton resort presentations have taken show-goers on art and architecturally informed trips around the world. From Bob Hope’s iconic John Lautner-designed home in Palm Springs and IM Pei’s Miho Museum outside of Kyoto, Japan, to the Oscar Niemeyer-designed Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and most recently, for Resort 2019 – Ghesquière’s fifth of such collections for the house – attendees were transported to the South of France; more specifically, to the outdoor gardens of the esteemed Fondation Maeght, a contemporary art museum tucked up in the hills of St. Paul-de-Vence.

As models wove intermediately throughout a labyrinth of Joan Miró sculptures and a maze of life-sized Giacometti figurines, of which silhouettes and volumes were cited as direct influences on the collection’s overall feel, Ghesquière’s classic eccentricities took center stage in the show’s intentionally mixed, matched, and mis-matched styling.
Unconventional silhouettes and unexpected details updated otherwise classic garments, disproportionate cuffs and oversized lapels, for example, breathed new life into basic shirting and conventional tailored jackets, while subtle nods to the Louis Vuitton’s iconic logo were strewn throughout a number of the collection’s looks. Odes to the 1980s and 90s, a longtime favorite reference point of the designer’s, were seen in oversized, sculpted shoulders, saturated colors, graffiti graphics, Kurt Cobain baby doll dresses, and structured patent leather outwear.
Ghesquière placed heavy importance on individualism and character, employing makeup artist Pat McGrath to render bold flames and delicate rose petals painted atop the center of model’s foreheads. Last year’s Archlight sneaker silhouettes were re-imagined in an array of variations, such as a thigh-high leather version with chunky gold soles, taking the concept of a ‘statement sneaker’ to new heights. Last but not least, a collaboration with American Vogue’s Creative Director at large Grace Coddington, bred a series of campy handbags and accessories based on quirky drawings she had done, emblemizing her own cats and Ghesquière’s dogs atop Vuitton logo patterns and prints. A small but standout detail that added unexpected complexity and quirkiness to a truly remarkable 59-look collection.
